Portable AC Removal: The Refrigerant Checklist
Keep the cooling system intact and choose a pickup route that accepts the unit.

A portable or window air conditioner contains refrigerant even when it no longer cools. Keep the unit intact, drain only the user-serviceable water reservoir, gather its accessories, and use a hauler or facility that accepts refrigerant equipment.
Do not open the sealed system
Do not cut tubing, remove the compressor, or drill the cabinet. Snohomish County lists air conditioners with other refrigerant appliances that are not accepted in its standard appliance-recycling area and directs residents to separate options.
Prepare a portable floor unit
Unplug it, follow the manufacturer’s directions for draining condensate, and let the exterior dry. Coil the vent hose without crushing it. Stack the window panels and remote with the unit so loose pieces do not disappear during the move.
Prepare a window unit
A window air conditioner needs to be safely removed from the opening before an ordinary pickup unless installation removal was explicitly agreed. These units can hold water and shift their weight suddenly. Use the manufacturer’s procedure and appropriate help, or hire a qualified installer.
| Unit detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Portable or window | Changes the access and preparation plan |
| Approximate weight | Helps select the carrying equipment |
| Stairs or elevator | Affects labor and route protection |
| Water drained | Reduces spills during movement |
| Cabinet intact | Keeps the refrigerant system closed |
Check the air conditioner removal service, then share the unit type and access details.
Sources and scope
Local disposal distinctions were checked against current Snohomish County, King County, or city guidance listed in the project research notes. Facility acceptance, fees, and programs can change; verify the responsible source before drop-off.
