How to Prepare a Refrigerator or Freezer for Removal
Emptying, thawing, measuring, and protecting the route before pickup day.

An old refrigerator is ready for pickup when it is empty, unplugged, thawed, dry, and reachable without last-minute furniture moves. Keep the sealed cooling system intact. Refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerant, so they need a receiving facility or hauler that accepts them.
Start 24 hours ahead when ice is present
Move food to another cold space, remove loose bins and shelves, then unplug the appliance. Put towels or a shallow tray near the base while the freezer compartment thaws. Dry the interior after the ice releases. A wet unit is harder to grip and can leave a slick trail across the floor.
Measure the entire route
Measure the appliance at its widest point, including handles that cannot be removed. Check the kitchen opening, every doorway, tight turn, stair landing, gate, and elevator. Note whether a door must come off its hinges. Do not assume the route used for delivery is still open; islands, shelving, and railings may have changed.
Pickup checklist
- Food and ice removed
- Unit unplugged and dry
- Loose shelves and bins removed or secured
- Water line disconnected without leaks
- Doors lightly secured after the interior is empty
- Clear route to the loading area
- Parking, gate, or elevator access confirmed
Keep the refrigerant system closed
Do not cut copper tubing, drill the cabinet, or dismantle the compressor. Snohomish County excludes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and other refrigerant equipment from its ordinary appliance-recycling stream and lists separate receiving options. That distinction is why the item type matters when you request a quote.
What to tell the pickup team
Give the model style, approximate size, floor level, stair count, and carry distance. Mention a built-in water line, a narrow doorway, or a steep drive. Photos can help when a French-door unit or chest freezer has a tight exit.
For an inside pickup, see our refrigerator and freezer removal service. If several appliance types are leaving together, start with the estimate checklist.
Sources and scope
Local disposal distinctions were checked against current Snohomish County, King County, or city guidance listed in the project research notes. Facility acceptance, fees, and programs can change; verify the responsible source before drop-off.
